What is melamine?
Our background for 30+ years was manufacturing cabinets/casework for large commercial projects (buisness, labs, schools, medical facilities, and hotels/time shares). So when we created our first line of Garage Cabinets in 2004, we wanted to use many of the same commercial materials like the 3/4" M2 Industrial Grade Melamine that we used for the cabinet boxes of our commercial cabinets.
Melamine is a generic term used in the woodworking industry. Melamine's core is made using sustainably grown wood chips combined with resin to create a very flat, consistent, and stable board that receives a smooth, moisture resistant, and cleanable surface.
The core of melamine is commonly refered to as Particle Board. Like most products or materials there are varying qualities from low quality to very high quality. Unfortunately some companies in the industry are cost conscious rather than quality conscious, and use a very low grade which sometimes gives particle board a black eye because many people lump all particle board into that same low quality bucket, and don't realize all 'particle board' is not equal.
All of our melammine is manufactured in Grayling Michigan USA, by a company called Arauco. This plant is one of newest and most sofisticated in the world. The process of manufacturing board is truly amazing, watch the video to learn more.
